Thank you for your interest in our research study! We are currently conducting a study that explores sexual challenges with individuals and/or couples who experience hip challenges. Our hope is to collect data to help us in our endeavor of creating a free guide that explores and addresses the intersection of sex and hip challenges. We hope to be able to become a voice for those who experience these challenges, providing support and education.
Hi, I am Anna Thomison, a licensed marriage and family therapist who specializes in relationship and sex therapy in north Texas.
You might be wondering why I'm doing research and asking you a bunch of questions about your sex life with hip dysplasia or other hip challanges. Well, I too was diagnosed with congenital dysplasia of the hip, now called Developmental dysplasia of the hip or DDH. And, like most people diagnosed with DDH in childhood, I endured braces, traction, surgeries, multiple casts, physical therapy, restrictions on physical activity, and chronic pain. By time I was 12, I developed osteoarthritis which gradually increased chronic pain and decreased my range of motion and mobility.
I know don't have to tell you that there is very little practical information available on how to enjoy a healthy, satisfying sex life with DDH. The little bit of information available is focused on surgery recovery and restrictions on sexual positions during recovery. Those of us who have struggled with DDH know that the pain, limited range of motion, and sometimes joint dislocations affects us for years if not decades, before we are considered a candidate for surgery. On top of that, surgery isn't always successful at decreasing pain or increasing flexibility.
What I did find out though was that there are others were also struggling with difficulties and encountering obstacles while trying to find practical, useful information on how to have enjoyable, satisfying sex with DDH. People DDH were reporting that the Sexual obstacles, limitations lead to decreased sexual activity and disrupted, destabilized their relationships.
So, true to my personality, when I set out to understand sexual health and how to improve the sexual lives of people struggling with physical limitations, I enrolled in a certificate training program and chose to focus on DDH and sexual health for my final project.
Hi, I am Robyn Flores, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate in the state of Texas, and a Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate in the of Colorado, supervised by Heather McPherson, LMFT-S, LPC-S, CST. I work with clients wanting to address relational and sexual concerns.
I am currently part of the Sexual Health Alliance Sex Therapy and Sex Educator certification program and on my way to finishing the final project with your help! Anna and I are collaboratively working on a project that addresses hip dysplasia, and other hip challenges, and the sexual concerns that coincide. Our goal is to collect survey data and synthesize it to, ultimately, create a guide to help individuals with hip challenges, educate their partners, and advocate for an awareness in the medical field that these are concerns that need to be discussed.
I want to honor the individuals who struggle with hip challenges and want to feel like they can create a healthy, satisfying sex life through the research that we conduct and the education we provide as the end-product of our project.
Thank you, in advance, for the time you take answering the questions in our survey!
